It’s no surprise that men are living four and a half times less longer than women when the rate of men seeking advice from a health professional is far lower. Men are being diagnosed with serious conditions like atherosclerosis, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes that are all preventable with lifestyle changes. And with 3 in 4 suicides in Australia affecting Men, Men’s health is something we need to start talking about and managing!
But there are many other daily sufferings that can be improved or avoided with diet and lifestyle changes which are a lot simpler than you think. Things like pain, inflammation, fatigue, anxiety, depression, excess alcohol can all be significantly improved or alleviated just through getting to know your body better. What is the shame in wanting to look after your health?
Some men that I have seen feel that there is somewhat of a stigma around men taking their health into their own hands. Things like cutting back on alcohol can cause disruption and backlash from peers and social groups. However in many cases this is only what they think will happen and in actually fact they are met with support from family and friends and even find themselves inspiring change in others.
There are a few different reasons men suffer in silence other than the stigma including the old fashioned theory of men having to be strong, suck it up, soldier on. But doesn’t it make more sense that if we take the time to look after ourselves and get the help we need, we can be stronger and enjoy life and our loved one more.

Men are also less likely to talk about their health or be as open making it unfamiliar and more uncomfortable for them to put themselves in a situation where this is expected of them. Talking about our health even just with our close ones is a good way to make this easier. Also finding a health practitioner you are comfortable with and remember this what they do and hear everyday.
Nutrition and exercise are the best steps you can take to improve many more health concerns then you may think. It is also a great option for those who would like to take more control of their overall health for the long term. The focus becomes more about being the best version of you and prevention of illness as well as managing and improving already existing conditions.
There are many men out there suffering in silence with conditions that can be prevented or at the very least significantly improved. We need to encourage our men or lead by example if you are one to take control of your health. Don’t put up with feeling worse than you need to! Make a change, It’s easier than you may think!
